Dr. Cynthia L. Robinson is a native Omahan and University of Nebraska alum. A Goodrich Scholarship recipient, she earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree (1995) as a double major in Black Studies and Broadcasting and M.S. (1997) in Urban Studies, both from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and a Ph.D. (2005) in Communication Studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She began teaching Black Studies at UNO in 1997 and has taught Communication since 2000.  Since 2015, Dr. Robinson has been Chair of UNO’s Department of Black Studies.

Merging her two disciplines of Black Studies and Communication Studies, Dr. Robinson’s research areas are race, identity, cultural communication, and interpersonal relationships. Her doctoral research, “Communicating Black Female Beauty,” focused on the impact of race on Black female beauty perceptions. Her current research project entitled, “Black Males, Black Female Beauty, and the Color Complex: Do Skin Color and Hair Really Matter?” more closely examines how skin color and hair texture affect Black males’ perceptions of Black female beauty.
